Ethical Professional Practice
The Ethical Professional Practice competency area pertains to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to understand and apply ethical standards to one's work. While ethics is an integral component of all the competency areas, this competency area focuses specifically on the integration of ethics into all aspects of self and professional practice. [1]
Activity One:
One of the intriguing aspects of the ethical professional practice competency is the commitment to just and sustainable practices. My interest in sustainable practices can be traced back to my Scouting days, where I spent three summers teaching merit badges in the Ecology area. As a result of my rooted conservationism, I have found it fascinating to reinforce my passion for environmentalism with sustainable theory and practice. Working with the Student Green Initiative Fund committee this year has helped to strengthen my commitment to sustainability, provided me with best and innovative practices of sustainability, and given me language and tools to promote and discuss the ethical use of resources in higher education.
Activity Two:
One of the more thrilling aspects of graduate school is the collection of minds, experiences, and lenses that are gathered into a classroom at a given time. Paired with an engaged and intellectually stimulating faculty, conversation is often scintillating. One of the more recent examples of scintillating conversation occurred in the CSP 6050: Capstone Seminar course, where the students of the course engaged in several case studies regarding ethical professional practice and behavior in student affairs. By incorporating course literature, our internship experiences, and our lenses, we were able to engage in high-level dialogue and reflection.
