Law, Policy, and Governance
The Law, Policy, and Governance competency area includes the knowledge, skills, and attitudes relating to policy development processes used in various contexts, the application of legal constructs, and the understanding of governance structures and their effect on one's professional practice. [1]
Activity One:
At the onset of my second year of graduate school, law, policy, and governance was a competency that I had some comfort and experience with, but not extensive experience and knowledge of. As I look to enter the residence life field professionally, I recognized that gaining formal experience in conduct and policy systems would be crucial in aiding my job search, as well as my future. During the Fall 2012 semester, I was trained and commissioned as a member of the University Conduct Committee (UCC) at Bowling Green State University. This experience has not only introduced me to the student code of conduct, its also introduced me to new ways of engaging and implementing that code. In these conduct hearings I have been introduced to new methods and approaches of implementing student development theory, as well as encouraging development and growth through creative and innovative sanctioning. Through the process of learning and implementing the code of conduct through UCC, as well as implementing and enforcing it as a Greek House Director, I have refined my ability to critically engage and challenge policies and procedures.
Activity Two:
During my time as the Baldwin-Wallace College Explorations/Study Abroad graduate intern, I was tasked with creating the office's first faculty-led trip handbook. The intent of the document was to provide faculty leaders of domestic and international study abroad trips with critical resources and information. Prior to the creation of this document, faculty leaders had been given the student handbook, augmented with an additional few sheets with important contact information and crisis management tactics. In creating this document, I researched institutional policies regarding off-campus trips and experiences, institutional risk management policies, as well as peer institutions' policies and documents for faculty-led trips. In completing this document, I gained experience in learning how policies are developed, the contexts for various policies and procedures, and understanding as to how the policies created through this document impacted my office, the parties affiliated with it, and the institution, to some extent, as a whole.
